Digital Optical Method (DOM TM)
ERDC-CERL and University of Illinois (UI) have developed a new plume opacity measurement technology known as Digital Optical Method (DOMTM). DOMTM estimates the opacity of plumes in the out door ambient environment by analyzing digital images that are produced by off-the-shelf digital cameras. Airborne particulate matter causes light extinction due to its ability to absorb and scatter light. Opacity is expressed as the percent of light that is attenuated by the plume. DOMTM includes both contrast and transmission models that are based on light extinction theory to calculate plume opacity. Air permit holders and facility operators are required to measure/monitor opacity from their stationary air pollution sources. Presently, the ASTM standard for monitoring is US Method 9 which relies on human visual perception to measure opacity. The DOMTM method provides improved consistency and accuracy of the measurements, and permits retention of a digital record of the event.

Wireless Blade Monitoring & Wireless Communication System
Many helicopters, both civilian and military, use pressurized rotor blades as a means to detect damage to their integrity. The gas pressure is monitored and a loss of pressure indicates the possible formation of microscopic cracks in the blade that could cause catastrophic failure leading to the loss of an aircraft. Currently used is a mechanical bellows indicator that requires a visual determination of pressure loss, which includes a radioactive source and an on-board detector to provide remote sensing. Since this technology is expensive, maintenance intensive, environmentally hazardous and banned in some foreign military applications, the need exists for a rotor blade monitoring system that can provide an improved in-flight indication of potential rotor blade faults without use of radioactive isotopes and be easy to use and simple to install. As a result the Navy developed a tested a wireless/temperature measurement system for helicopter blade health monitoring that does not use any hazardous material, it’s easy to install, and more dependable.

SimpleSilence: Method and apparatus for controlling tonal noise from subsonic fans
The SimpleSilence technology, developed at Université de Sherbrooke (Canada) and Université de Poitiers (France), aims to reduce tonal noise from subsonic fans. ,This underlying principle is based on the interaction mechanisms between an obstruction and the fan propeller. MEMS RF Switch Integrated Process
A low-temperature integrated process for manufacturing RF micro-electromechanical switches (MEMS) in hermetic thin-film encapsulations has been developed and demonstrated. The integrated thin-film encapsulation approach forms a sealed dielectric package around the device as part of the device fabrication process, so that devices leaving the fabrication facility are fully protected in hermetic enclosures. The capping and sealing processes are done at low temperatures compatible with most RF MEMS devices, forming a low-profile small-footprint low-loss package ideally suited to integrated circuit applications.

Continence Ostomy Systems
Zassi’s Continent Ostomy System is a non-pouch ostomy management solution. Ostomy surgery generally requires the resection of the part or the entire colon and/or rectum and the subsequent diversion of the colon or small bowel via an ostomy wherein the end of the remaining healthy portion of the colon or small bowel is brought through the abdominal wall, inverted on itself and sutured in place to form a stoma. From that point forward, the individual is forever incontinent as their fecal stream is continuously diverted through their ostomy into a plastic bag (ostomy pouch) attached to their abdomen via adhesives, glues or belts. Zassi is developing a Continent Ostomy System that will consist of a family of single-use disposable and proprietary devices including: an ostomy sealing device, a moisture barrier, an irrigation system and a drainage sleeve. In addition to the disposables, the COS will include a means of controlling regional colonic motility. Zassi’s research indicates the failure to control regional colonic activity explains the disappointing results of many previous attempts at non-pouch, ostomy management alternatives. Zassi believes the inclusion of active colonic motility control in their Continent Ostomy System will ensure the reliable continence these consumers are searching for and will demand before abandoning their undesirable but predictable ostomy pouches.
